Reports of our retirement have been greatly exaggerated! While it’s true we’ve been off the digital grid for a little while, we haven’t gone anywhere—we’ve just been busy weaving a brand-new digital experience for our community.

Since 1987, we’ve been your authentic hippie resource, and we believe there’s a little hippie in all of us. That’s why we are working hard behind the scenes to polish the crystals and get our new online store ready for you.

We are currently tuning our instruments and getting everything just right. Stay tuned for the grand reopening of our online store—it’s just around the corner!

Hey Now!

We love that you love what we are all about here at Gypsy Rose! We are all about the the peaceful hippie scene and keeping this love vibe alive. And there are so many others who share this love of the scene and also work to keep spreading loving & peaceful vibes to the world. Many do so by owning their own unique shops and boutiques filled with an incredible variety of all things hippie, bohemian, retro, vintage, ethnic, eco-friendly, classic-rockin’, natural, celestial, and whimsical.

Is there a shop in your area that has that one-of-a-kind freaky fare that you just can’t find anywhere else? You know… the place where all the cool people meet & there’s good tunes blaring on the stereo? Maybe there’s some black light posters on the wall or huge multi colored tapestries draped from the ceiling. Maybe filled with books of eastern mysticism or hundreds of bumper stickers from the witty to the laugh out loud funny to the serious environmental & peace slogans? Maybe there’s a distinctive aroma of Indian incense permeating every corner? YEAH, THAT PLACE! If you are lucky enough to have one of these shops in your area then give ‘em some love! It would be a dull world without that groovy kind of shop. And they won’t be around forever if we don’t step inside their doors & support them.

These shops keep the vibe alive in their little corners of the world, and offer a sensory perception that you just can’t find in cyberspace. Walk in to any local head shop, boutique, smoke shop, record store, vintage shop, or hippie haven and you’ll get so much more than just cool gear. You’ll get the chance to sniff the incense, to feel the fibers, to dig through mountains of cool gear and to get to know the people who are dedicating their lives to keeping this scene alive. Share some stories, have some laughs, and learn a thing or two by swingin’ in and saying hi to your local head shop owners. If you love this scene of peace, love, and hippie vibes, there’s no better way to support it and everyone who shares it with us!

DID YOU KNOW:

Hemp has proven itself throughout its 10,000-year history providing people with food, fuel, and fiber! No other natural resource has the potential of hemp. In four months an acre of hemp can produce as much paper as an acre of 20 year-old trees. Hemp has the ability to grow quickly at almost any climate without the use of pesticides or herbicides and does not deplete the minerals in the soil, thus making hemp an incredibly versatile plant. There are many benefits of using hemp products. The hemp fiber is not only longer and more durable, but also the strongest of fibers. It is resistant to heat and mildew and over time your hemp clothing will constantly soften through washing with no deterioration of the fibers. With all these positive attributes, it is hard to understand how hemp has gained such a controversial name.

Hemp is not dope!

When life hands you lemons make Cristal? Okay, so lemons don’t make champagne but you get the picture. Sometimes a dash of magic mixed with a bowl full of hope can turn even the most abysmal of fails into a burgeoning transformation. I’ve always been interested in fashion, beauty, and culture. And because I follow the world of fashion and the people in it, I stumbled upon the powerful work of the Aussie supermodel and mogul, Miranda Kerr. The book, Treasure Yourself: Powerful Thoughts For My Generation. The lesson, treasure and believe in yourself. What I learned from my well-worn copy brought positivity to my life during a time of starting over. Not just another pretty face, Kerr lives a holistic lifestyle that’s filled with essential oils, meditation, and an overall zen approach to health and wellness. Hence, her crystal obsession, in a very non-Walter White kind of way. Ahh, I can smell the patchouli now… but I digress. After gaining so much from her inspirational book, I delved into the world of crystals as Miranda Kerr is a big proponent of their power that she even infuses the energy of crystals into her natural beauty line, Kora Organics. Kerr states that she’s “been using [crystals] for a long time, and that’s when you really begin to understand their energy and their power” (1).

Crystals, just a bunch of hocus pocus? Not necessarily. “Crystals are millions of years old and were forged during the earliest part of the earth’s formation […]” (4). Based on what scientists have gathered through geology, one might even say crystals are the fundamental units of life. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the use of crystals dates back more than 6,000 years to ancient Mesopotamia. Civilizations such as the Romans, Egyptians, and Greeks also used the power of crystals to “promote healing, enlightenment, and fulfillment” (3). Crystals dwell in the realm of the metaphysical, meaning it is of or relating to a reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses. It is believed to open the gates of the mind and enhance it’s psychic abilities. Similar to that three-eyed raven we have come to adore, winter is coming, one must allow the mind to transcend beyond in order to “see” what is right in front of it. Chakra, no, not the first name of that chart topping musical wonder of the 70’s and 80’s but the ancient Sanskrit word for wheel or disk. The body’s chakra refers to wheels of energy where matter and consciousness meet. Through the metaphysical philosophy, crystals help to assist and maintain our body’s physical, mental, and emotional balance, no prescription needed.

Now that you have some understanding and historical intel into crystals let’s talk about where in the world to begin when it comes to which crystal helps with what. There are a plethora of crystals and stones to choose from that it can seem overwhelming but lucky for you there is most likely a crystal for that. This blog is not long enough to discuss each and every one but I have narrowed it down to the three most commonly used à la Ms. Kerr, amethyst, rose quartz, and clear quartz.

Amethyst

~Chakra of spirit

~Rids negative energy, treats addictions, protects against over-indulgence, and clears the mind

~Lavender or purple in color

~High vibration

Rose Quartz

~Chakra of connection between spirit and matter

~Promotes positive energy and emotional balance, enhances all types of love (self, love of others, and unconditional), releases stress/tension/anger, and helps to curb jealousy

~Light pink in color

Clear Quartz

~Chakra of spirit

~Master healer and energy amplifier

~Connects you with your higher-self, intuition, and spirit guides, cleanses and enhances organs as well as the soul

~Clear in color

~Works at the specific vibrational frequency of the person who needs healing

For any crystal, you want to try to make sure you learn it’s lineage. “You want to have the most positive, clean, and clear energies in your crystals” (4). Nobody wants a crystal tainted by bad vibes so if it doesn’t feel right put it down and keep searching. It’s very important to periodically cleanse and recharge your crystals and stones by leaving them out in the moonlight and/or sunlight specifically when they’re at their brightest and strongest.

As Miranda says, “I am a huge believer in the power of positive thinking. We all have unlimited potential, and if we accept the obstacles that cross our paths and learn from the lessons involved, we can reach our full potential” (2). Whether you believe in the power of crystals is up to you. There is nothing wrong with anything that promotes positive vibes and inner peace. Give it a try, you may find there is a little magic in the world after all.

Memorial Day is right around the corner and we thought we’d share two of our favorite recipes from Dead Tour. The perfect excuse to break out your New Grateful Dead Steal Your Plate Apron and fire up the grill. The first recipe can be prepared and refrigerated up to a day in advance and benefits from a little marinating time so here we go–>>

Mexicali Blues Guacamole Dip

Chile Paste Ingredients:
1/2 whole finely chopped white onion
2 firmly packed tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
4 teaspoons finely chopped jalapeño, or more if you
1 teaspoon salt, or as needed
—————————————–
Remaining Ingredients:
6 medium ripe but firm Hass avocados
3 whole ripe tomato – diced
4 firmly packed tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1/2 whole finely chopped white onion
2 Limes – halved
Salt to taste.
Tortilla chips and/or fresh corn tortillas

Make the chile paste:
Finely dice the onion, cilantro, jalapeño.

Grind the onion, cilantro, jalapeño, and salt together in a mortar & pestle until all the ingredients are ground into a fine paste. Spend some time on this step – you really want to incorporate all those flavors into a concentrated paste. If you don’t have access to a mortar & pestle, use a fork to mash all the ingredients to a paste in a wide hardwood bowl.

Cut each avocado in half, working the knife blade around the pit. Twist the halves to separate them and flick out the pit with the tip of the knife. Fold a kitchen towel in quarters and hold it in the palm of your “non-knife” hand. Rest an avocado half cut side up in your palm and make 3 or 4 evenly spaced lengthwise cuts through the avocado flesh down to the skin, without cutting through it. Make 4 crosswise cuts in the same way. Scoop the diced avocado flesh into a mixing bowl. Repeat with the remaining avocado halves. Combine the remaining ingredients with the chili paste and the juice from the two limes and you should end up with the freshest guacamole you’ve ever eaten Enjoy.

Shakedown Grilled Veggie Burritos

Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
2 cups Long Grain Rice
4 cups Low Sodium Chicken Broth
2 whole Limes, Juiced And Zested
1/4 cup Chopped Cilantro
2 whole Zucchini, Cut Into Slices Lengthwise
1 whole Yellow Squash, Cut Into Slices Lengthwise
1 whole Potabello Mushroom, Cut Into Slices Lengthwise
2 ears Corn shucked
Salt to taste
1 can Black Beans
6 whole Burrito-sized Wheat Tortillas
1 Small Onion, Finely Chopped
2 Roma Tomatoes, Diced
1 cup Grated Colby Jack Cheese
Toppings: Mexicali Blues Guacamole Dip, Hot Sauce

Instructions

Combine chicken broth, rice, olive oil and the juice and zest of 1 lime. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20-25 minutes until all the liquid is absorbed. Stir in the juice and zest from the remaining lime, then stir in the cilantro. Set aside.

Brush zucchini and squash slices, along with the ears of corn, with olive oil. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Grill them on a grill pan, a charcoal grill, or saute them in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, turning them halfway through. Remove when the veggies have great color on the outside.

Set aside to cool, then dice them.

Heat the beans in a small saucepan until hot.
Warm the tortillas in the microwave for 30 seconds.

To assemble the burritos, lay out each tortilla on your work surface. Spoon on rice, then beans, then sprinkle on plenty of grilled veggies. Top with chopped onion, tomato, cheese, and any other toppings you’d like. Spoon salsa all across the top. Tuck in the sides, then roll the burrito up as tightly as you can.

Cut in half and put on some cool tunes and enjoy!

As many of you are aware, on Saturday April 25, 2015 a devastating earthquake hit Nepal greatly affecting their largest city & capital, Kathmandu. Nepal & Kathmandu especially are near & dear to Gypsy Rose’s heart for many reasons. We have established lasting relationships with some wonderful people there & we consider them part of the Gypsy Rose Family. For over 20 years we have worked as a team to create and maintain jobs for both Nepalese and Americans.

Our thoughts & prayers are with the many people affected by this horrible event in Nepal, India, Tibet and other locations. Gypsy Rose’s owner was actually in Kathmandu, Nepal when this event occurred. He is ok & we are so thankful. He is extending his stay in Kathmandu to offer his assistance to the people.

In these first few days we are only partially aware of the dire circumstances facing the citizens of Kathmandu. Many people are displaced & living in makeshift tent cities. The actual government has only been able to set up a few official shelters. And many others are simply outside in unseasonably cold and wet conditions. They only have limited medical attention available to assist the injured. Not to mention those who may still be trapped in the rubble. Water, food and electricity are scarce. The lack of these necessities is leading to a breaking point. They need aid right now to prevent further devastation as supplies run out.

Nepal’s government does not alone have the infrastructure & resources to sufficiently provide the aid & care that is needed for such a catastrophic event. The Nepalese people do not have the insurance & access to credit & financial assistance that first world nations have. That is why outside international aid is so gravely important.

Gypsy Rose is asking you to help. We are collecting money to send directly to Nepal which will go 100% to the people. Since our owner is physically at the site, this helps us to assess what gaps are not being covered by the big emergency organizations. This first hand knowledge then allows him to purchase directly whatever will help the most. We have followed this pattern before in our past efforts in providing aid & these methods have proven successful. We will be posting updates on money raised & the different projects funded as the days unfold. Today is still day one as we move into a time of recovery.

We thank you for taking the time to read this and for your support,

Gypsy Rose would like to honor the life of one of the world’s most remarkable figures, the late Nelson Mandela, the President of the Republic of South Africa from 1994-1999. Among his many accomplishments & hardships Mandela will no doubt be most remembered for his quest to bring unity to his homeland and abroad. Mandela faced great odds in his fight against human rights abuses. The young Rolihlahla Mandela lived in a different South Africa than the one we know today. Segregation had existed before in South Africa while it was a colony of Great Britain & Holland. The government institution of apartheid in the mid 1900s furthered this segregation. Apartheid drew deep divisions between the races which greatly affected the black majority along socio-economic lines while the ruling white minority enjoyed prosperity. Through his opposition to these human rights inequalities, Mandela faced trials and ultimately a conviction of conspiracy which led to his infamous 27 years behind bars. After years of international and internal pressure, South Africa abolished apartheid and allowed multiracial elections after his release in 1990. And in 1994 Nelson Mandela became president, the first black citizen to do so. He did not begin his term with bitter, vindictive retribution but rather he worked with his fellow white citizens to try to improve relations in South Africa. Unity, not division, led the way. It was not an easy time for him or South Africa but the nation made great steps as the century came to a close. Nelson Mandela and South Africa, like many people and nations throughout history, are not without their critics. But from their struggles and successes we can all learn and hopefully improve our world

Gypsy Rose strives to continue to spread the word of peace & unity. You’ve seen the words and the slogans throughout our catalog & website pages: COEXIST, PEACE, ONE PEOPLE ONE WORLD ONE LOVE, HARMONY, RESPECT, COMPASSION, LIVE YOUR DREAMS, WE MUST BE THE CHANGE WE WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD. But they are not just mere words and slogans. They represent powerful lessons, teachings & beliefs which apply to all people and all nations throughout history. From a man who rose from the strife of early 1900s South Africa to your own story in your own town, these words echo Gypsy Rose’s message of love, peace and unity. Long live the memory of the great Nelson Mandela.

Peace, Gypsy Rose

Gypsy Rose was sad to hear of the passing of the great folk singer & protest icon Pete Seeger at the end of 2013. Pete was born into a musical family in the early 1900s and that exposure no doubt influenced his path in life. His father Charles Seeger spoke out against World War I causing him to give up an important teaching position shortly before Pete was born. So you can see that pacifism was present in Pete’s early life in addition to the wonders of music. Pete’s parents, aunts & uncles were a diverse group of educated & culturally aware individuals. It’s no wonder that Pete & his half brothers & half sisters ALL became folk singers! They KNEW that music was such a powerful tool to get their message into the minds of the people. The folk tradition involves sharing & passing the stories down from generation to generation. From town to city. From farm to factory. From living room to concert hall. This is FOLK MUSIC! We’re not talking polite applause and then enforced silence with hands folded while the performer just sings to you. Pete vigorously encouraged his audiences to SING ALONG with him! He demanded it! Pete also published a world famous banjo instruction book (How to Play the Five-String Banjo) that brought the basics of the instrument to the beginner in a style that only he could teach. He was not some “big star in a glass house.” He believed that the song was everyone’s to share. He was most definitely one of the people. And he not only spoke the language of the people, he SANG the language of ALL people.

At times, Pete’s actions threatened the success of his own career as a musician. But he stood by his beliefs. The MESSAGE was more important than success or fear of upsetting the status quo. Pete kept some beliefs throughout his life. But Pete was strongly opposed to biographers, interviewers and fellow musicians portraying him to be a “saint”. He knew that he himself, like all humans, had made mistakes. Later in life, he expressed regret for his earlier views on communism in Stalinist Russia. He was not afraid to apologize & this is something from which we can all learn.

Pete sang alongside the other folk greats including Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly in support of labor & civil rights, pacifism & racial equality. Pete paraphrased his friend Woody’s strong message that appeared on his guitar (“This machine kills fascists”) by putting the words “This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender” atop the head of his banjo. That instantly recognizable banjo traveled the world & helped Pete spread the word to millions for decades & decades. Woody & Leadbelly’s generation moved on to the generation of Bob Dylan and the “Folk Revival” of the 1960s. At Pete’s 90th birthday bash held at Madison Square Garden in 2009 he found himself surrounded by the likes of Dave Matthews, Bruce Springsteen , Warren Haynes and dozens of other performers of varying ages & styles.

Pete made his home in the lovely Hudson Valley of New York for many years. He helped to form the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater in the mid 1960s. This fine organization helps to clean up the Hudson River & surrounding areas by educating the public & raising awareness to the environmental concerns that affect this beautiful part of the U.S. They sailed their namesake vessel (the sloop Clearwater) up and down the mighty Hudson to bring their message directly to the people. Even politicians that may have differed in their views from Pete (such as former NY Governor George Pataki) expressed their support & approval of Clearwater’s endeavors. Each year the Clearwater Festival (or Great Hudson River Revival) still raises funds for the organization with a HUGE all-star 2 day musical event. Pete may not be performing on the festival’s stage anymore in the physical sense, but “Clearwater” audiences will no doubt feel his presence for years to come.

Pete Seeger & Gypsy Rose share many core values & beliefs:
The importance of raising awareness of human rights & equality.
Teaching respect for the environment.
And of course…. The POWER of the time honored tradition of song!

In the spirit of Pete and the “folk process” we’d like to share the message & pass it on by inviting you to visit these fine websites:
